Situated at the northwestern foothills of Mt. Natib and Bataan National Park, the Subic Bay Rainforest is one of the largest remaining lowland tropical rainforests in Luzon. At least 200 species of birds have been recorded in the Subic Bay Rainforest including numerous lowland forest endemics.

The Marilaque Highway traverses excellent forested areas at around 650-750 masl at the southern portion of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range. The area became popular with the birdwatching community in the last 10 years, with almost 200 bird species being recorded there.

This area is located between Infanta and Metro Manila. About an hour drive from Infanta, the Subdivision sits around 200-300 masl on the lower slopes of southern Sierra Madre Mountain Range. It has been cleared for development into a residential area but there are still patches of second growth lowland forest in the perimeter hosting over 150 bird species.

La Mesa Ecopark popularly known as LMEP, the park is located on the edge of a watershed forest reserve and reservoir called La Mesa Dam.  Despite its small size, this small patch of lowland forest holds many surprises for the observant birder.

One of the most recently established birding sites, thanks to the support of the local government in the area. Canarem Lake in Victoria, Tarlac, has been a go-to destination to spot numerous waterbirds in the country. This freshwater wetland has been noted for high counts of Philippine Ducks, Wandering Whistling Ducks, and Pheasant-tailed Jacanas among other species.

This historically legendary wetland site is home to a large number of Philippine Ducks. Several migratory species of Ducks, Reed-warblers, Grasshopper-warblers, Plovers, and Godwits have been recorded in this area. Nowadays, due to flooding during the rainy season, traversing the road to Candaba Swamp may be difficult.

Intavas Trail starts at a community settlement named Sitio Intavas. It is a 1.5 km long trek on a rocky unpaved road with a gentle upslope. At the end of this trail is a resting shed and the start of a steep trek up to the peak of Mt. Kitanglad.

Cinchona Forest Reserve is a known nesting site for Philippine Eagles in the Southeastern edge of Mt Kitanglad Range.  It was established in the 1920s as a plantation for Cinchona Trees to boost production of anti-malaria ingredient – Quinine. The well-preserved forest here provides habitat several Philippine Eagles and numerous Mindanao endemic wildlife. 

CEDAR is a reforestation project in Mindanao co-managed by the Local Government of Impasugong, Bukidnon and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The trail heading towards Dila and Gantungan Falls host several of Mindanao’s most elusive endemic species.

Philippine Eagle Center was initially established for the rescue and rehabilitation of Philippine Eagles. A sanctuary for the giant raptors, the facility has since expanded to cover other Philippine raptors, other threatened birds and wildlife and now serves as to educate the public about threatened species and their habitats.

Bislig Lowland Forests was once a logging concession for one of the largest logging companies in the Philippines. It has since been abandoned and its remnant forests allowed to regenerate. It is one of the most popular birdwatching sites in Mindanao with its lowland forests serving as home to numerous endemic bird species

Napsan Road is a 30-kilometer stretch of road traversing central Palawan between Puerto Prinsesa City proper and barangay Napsan. The most productive areas are between the 10 – 20 km marks with good forest cover on both sides of the road. In some areas, the road overlooks a river and has sweeping panoramas of the opposite ridgeline providing opportunities to see raptors, Palawan Hornbills, and other birds in flight.

Private birding hide. We visit a private birding hide established by Palawan-based birders and guides to help conserve Palawan’s threated birds and wildlife species and promote birdwatching and bird photography tourism.

Irawan Watershed Forest is a protected area covering around 3,500 hectares of lowland rainforest and is the main water supply of Puerto Princesa City.  The City Environment and Natural Resource Office (CENRO) has established birdwatching hides in the watershed to promote birdwatching tourism in support of the forest conservation efforts.
